The way organizations manage data is changing. For years, desktop-based tools were the backbone of integration work, but today’s businesses need more: agility, governance, and trusted insights at scale. They also need to keep costs in check while empowering different personas across the enterprise—from data engineers and business analysts to administrators and executives.

That’s why Pentaho Data Integration (PDI) is moving from a desktop application to a modern, web-based user experience. This isn’t just a technology refresh—it’s about rethinking how integration platforms support the speed, flexibility, and trust today’s organizations demand.

Why This Matters

This shift enables us to deliver a consistent UX across all Pentaho products, faster innovation cycles, and simpler deployments. Instead of desktop installs, users will be able to access PDI directly in the browser—designing, saving, deploying, and monitoring pipelines in one place. This reduces friction, accelerates productivity, and lowers the total cost of ownership.

For administrators, the benefits are just as significant. Centralized management improves governance and ensures users only work with authorized, trusted data. IT teams gain visibility into how pipelines are configured, deployed, and executed—streamlining oversight and strengthening compliance.

Built With Customer Feedback

This transition to a modern web-based UI reflects our continued commitment to meeting user needs. For data integration, that means tools that provide a consistent platform experience to reduce friction and boost productivity.

Designed for Every Persona

Data engineers and business analysts will get a ready-to-use, intuitive tool. Administrators will gain greater control. Business leaders can cut costs and accelerate insights. This is smart simplicity in action: removing complexity without removing capability.

And now, with the new functionality to manage the lifecycle of Data Integration projects, data engineers will be able to organize their work in a clear, structured way. This not only boosts productivity but also makes it far easier to move pipelines between environments—such as from development to QA—without confusion. Work is properly organized, properly structured, and ready for faster deployment.

Flexible Deployment

Pentaho has been available with multiple deployment models – on-prem to cloud marketplaces. However, there has always been a need to deploy desktop client tools for designing ETL pipelines. This transition enables customers to eliminate desktop installations, allowing for more flexible deployment models, including turnkey deployments in hyperscaler marketplaces.

What’s Next

We’re also investing in Pentaho Business Analytics and will be introducing a drag-and-drop data modeling interface to replace our legacy desktop-based modeling tools. This will be followed by updates to our Analytics and Reporting components. All of these will make data and insights more accessible to users.

The Bottom Line

Pentaho’s new web-based experience brings clarity to data chaos, accelerates time-to-value, and empowers teams to innovate faster. By simplifying complexity and centralizing control, organizations can reduce costs, improve governance, and deliver trusted insights at scale.

This is the next step in helping businesses get data-fit—ready for AI, analytics, and whatever comes next.
